Story I'm working on... just found it again!
Introduction
So, my days start as normally as yours. I wake up, do my day-to-day routine; nothing changes it much. Now, my nights on the other hand, they’re a different matter.
I should probably inform you now; I’m not the average 18 year old female. A few years back I met this boy, not too much younger than me. His name is Talon. He had a sweet, innocent-looking face, with pale blue eyes you can almost get lost in. I soon fell in love, though he never returned the feeling. Until one night, he showed up on my back porch. He came to ask if I would talk with him outside; he needed to tell me something.
I shrugged on a jacket and walked with him. He took me a little way into the woods, so as not to be interrupted. We found a fallen tree and once we sat, he grabbed my hands. He told me that since the time we had met, I had been on his mind constantly. I told him that I had feelings for him and seizing the opportunity, I leaned in for a kiss. He put a hand to my mouth to stop me. I was slightly embarrassed, but he told me it had nothing to with me. He wanted me to kiss him, but he was waiting for the right moment. I quickly regained my pride, knowing now that he at least wanted me.
As I stared at him in the glow of the full moon, he looked back at me. In an instant I saw the shock, the pain, and the horror in his eyes. I grabbed him by the shoulders and gentle shook him when he didn’t respond to my voice. I cupped his face in my hands, and asked “Talon, what’s wrong?”
“Raven, run away… please… run…” was his response.
I wasn’t planning on just leaving him there, so I stayed. He was feverish to the touch, and doubled over in pain. He looked up to see if I was still there, and that’s when I saw his eyes. They were golden, and they held all of his emotions; love, pain, horror, and…hunger. He began to growl like a mad dog and his skin slowly gave way to fur. There were a few cracking noises, and his body began to shift.
I turned to run, finally unfrozen from fright; I was too late. The creature Talon had turned into grabbed me from behind with fur covered hands. The last thing I remember was him breathing on my neck, someone whispering “trust me, please” and the sharp pain of teeth tearing through flesh.
I woke up the next day with small pin-point scars on my neck, and the form of the pentagram cut into my palm. I was okay for a while; okay, but still paranoid. A month went by before I started noticing weird things going on. That night as I lay in bed trying to sleep, I began to get hot. I went outside to get some cool air. As I looked up into the full moon, a strange sensation swept across me. It was then that I realized what happened that night; the last night I saw Talon. He had given me the course of then loupe garoupe; the werewolf. And it seemed he had left Romania for good. Till now.
Chapter One
I woke with a bit of a start. It is early morning; the sun isn’t even up yet. The dream I had wasn’t what woke me up. What woke me up was something real, something in my room. Whatever, or whoever it was had said something. It whispered three little words that have haunted me for two years; “Trust me, please.”
I turned on my light and looked around, expecting to see someone. Of course, I was just paranoid. No one was in my room but me. The voice I had heard was in my head. I should be used to it by now; that voice always wakes me up the day of the full moon. You would think that after more then two dozen full moons, I would be used to it. It’s kind of hard to get used to the voice of someone that made you into a monster.
I got out of bed, and got my stuff around for a shower. After a rough night, a nice shower always makes me feel better. As I walked down the steps to the kitchen, I smelt coffee brewing. Must be mom was up and awake. She is the only one in the family that makes coffee. I tried to sneak up on her, but she turned around with a smile and said “morning sunshine!” I never could sneak up on her too well. It is quite funny looking at my mother. It’s almost like looking in the mirror. I have her dark brown hair and chocolate brown eyes, but her hair has grays and she needs glasses to see.
“I heard you howling in your sleep, Raven.” Mom said gently. She walked back over to the counter where she left a recipe book open.
“Really, I wonder why?” I responded sarcastically. “It can’t be that there is gonna be a full moon tonight, could it?” My mom is used to my sarcasm, even if it is mean sometimes. Her and my other family members all know about my “condition”, so normally they don’t make any jokes about it. I joined my mother at the counter and laid my arm across her shoulders. “Making breakfast? I’ll take bacon… and some sausage… and…”
“If you want all that, make it yourself!” Mom said roughly. “And no, I am not making breakfast. I’m looking ahead for a couple of days, seeing as your grandmother will be here to visit.” Mom is always freaked when her mother comes to visit. Grandma is a little anal about things being in the right order. And, if she sees something isn’t right, she tells my mother about it twice. If it’s not fixed after that, grandma fixes it herself. It can get quite irritating, but usually, Grandma only visits for a weekend.
“I’m sorry I snapped at you honey.” Mom started to say. I stopped her mid-sentence.
“Mom, I know how stressed out you get when Grams comes around. And I understand that you didn’t mean to take it out on me. Find a different way to deal with Grams. She won’t be around for long anymore… I think the phrase is ‘she’s not a spring chick anymore’?” Mom got a laugh out of that phrase. “Your Grandmother never was a spring duck, let alone a chick!” Mom said, laughing even harder. I know it is mean to pick on people like that, but it is the truth; when it comes to my grandmother at least.
“So, would you like me to make you something honey? Something with a lot of meat, I’m guessing.” Mom asked, though she already knew the answer. “Mom, I appreciate the offer, but I don’t want anything. I have to save room for dinner tonight.” I responded, knowing full well that what I had said made my mother‘s skin crawl. I have a habit of doing that to her.
“Besides, I have to get in the shower, get ready for school, and all that fun stuff.” I said over my shoulder as I dashed towards the bathroom. My dad had just gotten up and I could hear his footsteps coming down the hall towards the stairs. Not that I hate my dad or anything, he just likes being cranky in the morning.
“Run Raven, here he comes!” mom called after me quietly.
In the middle of my shower, I get a phone call. When I picked up the phone, I almost immediately hung it up.
“Of course she’ll answer the phone. It’s in her nature to answer the phone, even if she’s in the shower.” The voice on the other line said, not to me but to someone in the background. But I still recognized the voice, even after two years.
“Hello, Talon.” I said coldly.
“Well, Raven. Nice to know you didn’t let me down by answering the phone. And if my ears are correct, you’re in the shower.” Talon replied conversationally.
“Talon, what did you call for? The last time I saw your sorry hide was when we were in the woods two years ago. Why call me now? You never bothered to before now!” I said sharply. Maybe he could hear the hatred, the anger, and some of the longing in my voice; what he said next, blew my mind.
“Raven, I need you. And this time, it’s for real. Not just for my recruiting. But, I can’t discuss this over the phone. Can I come and get you for school?”
What did this guy think he was, Romeo trying to win Juliet’s heart? “Talon, why are you even bothering trying to convince me that it was an accident? You did what you did because you wanted to. What’s done is done, let’s let it rest!” Talon was quiet for a moment, thinking.
“Raven, I won’t lie to you. I did what I did on purpose, but there was a good reason that you just couldn’t know about till now. Trust me, please.” Talon said it in a begging tone, just like before. But this time, he really meant it. And I could tell.
“Talon, do you remember where I live? Meet me outside in 10 minutes and you can tell me what ever you need to tell me.” I said. I wasn’t sure how well this would go over with my parents. When I came home in a daze from his bite, they swore they would kill him. After careful research though, my parents found that if they kill Talon, or if he dies, I die as well. We hung up, and I finished in the shower. I ran upstairs to grab my school things, when I heard the horn beeping. Mom was at the door looking at the car in the drive.
“Nice ride. The guy worth it?” mom asked as I started to leave. I looked back and answered as honestly as I could, “I hope he isn’t just wasting my time.”
Chapter Two
Talon looked handsome, even after two years. He sat behind the steering wheel, looking out at the changing seasons visible on the leaves. He looked good, just staring at the orange, red, and brown leaves of my maple tree. I took in the sight of him before finally getting in the car.
“Nice to see you after all these years, Raven. You have changed a lot and, might I add, for the better. You look great.” Talon’s greeting was what I had expected it to be, sweet and fake.
“Yea, Talon. You look great too. Haven’t really changed your attitude though, have you? What do you want, calling me at 6:00 in the morning to take me to school at 7:45? My mom is asking about it, and I plan on keeping her in the dark. My parents want to kill you and up until I found the history of loupe garoupe, I was going to let them. And you know what else? You embarrassed the hell out of me that night, than you lead me on. You made me think that you really liked me, but I turned out to be just a piece of meat to you, literally!”
Talon was quiet for a moment, than looked at me. “Are you done yelling at me? I was going to explain all of this to you, and that’s why I picked you up for school.” He started up the mustang and drove off in the opposite direction of the school. Well, I thought to myself, mom is definitely going to be asking about this one.
“So, where are we going, if not to school? I mean, my mom doesn’t know that the person that is driving me to school happens to be you, so when I get home she’s gonna ask ‘Was it any good?’” I felt like I was rambling, and I don’t know why. Was I nervous? Or was I just anxious to learn why he needed to talk to me, than kill him afterwards?
“You’re not going to school. I didn’t plan on taking you to school. Did I say I was? Sorry, I didn’t mean to say it, I just thought that if your mom asked you, you could tell her I was taking you to school.” Talon said. He seemed nervous about something as well. I decided I would just sit still for a while. My nerves were making me shake, and I felt like he could tell. He was looking great and his features had matured over the past two years, just like everyone else’s. But, the way his face looked made him looked much older than 18. His hair was worn a little longer, and it curled around itself. It still was a light brown, although it looked as though he had colored it once; maybe a shade of red. His pale blue eyes stayed forward, moving slowly from one side of the road to the next.
I think he finally realized I was looking at him, because he shifted uneasily. I was so tempted to reach my hand out and play with his curls, like I used to. “Raven, you used to do that when you were bored.” Talon said. I looked at him and realized my hand must have a mind of its own, because it was twirling his hair between my fingers. I reluctantly dropped my hand to my lap and looked out my window. I can’t believe I really did it. I was just so tempted. I have to be more careful and remember what he did to me. That’s the only way I can keep myself from getting hurt again.
“You know, even if you sit there in the silence, I can feel the anger radiating off you.” Talon said after a long minute. “Aren’t you gonna ask me where we are going, or why I need to talk to you, or even why all this is going the way it is?” Talon looked at me briefly, and then set his gaze back on the road.
“The reason I don’t say anything, Talon, is because I don’t know what you want from me, so I’m afraid to insult you.” I lied. If he knew that for one second I was falling back in love with him, he would know I was still as weak as I was two years ago. I thought that I had toughened myself up, but I was obviously mistaken.
Talon kept driving for a few more miles before he finally pulled over. He turned the car off but left the radio on softly, kind of like it would relax both of us if it was there. It did work, until Talon turned in his seat and grabbed my hand. I wanted to pull back but I was frozen, looking in to his eyes. I felt like he could see my inner-most thoughts, and I tried to turn away. Just as I did, his hand flew up to my cheek to stop my head.
“I feel terrible enough as it is. Please, don’t look away from me with hurt in your eyes. All of this will make sense soon enough.” Talon said. I closed my eyes but I still felt his eyes searching for his answer.
Opening my eyes, I made my mind up. “Talon, I will listen to you, and if you deliver a good enough excuse for the curse you gave me, then I might forgive you.” He looked at me slightly hurt, but I knew that wouldn’t last very long.
“Alright, I’ll tell you. But even if you are not satisfied with my answer, you have to listen to my full story. I promise, I won’t lie, and I won’t bore you with a long drawn out story.” Talon’s eyes lit up at this last remark, as though this was a story he was telling to a bunch of adoring fans.
“Fine, I agree.”
“We have a problem. The ‘community’ you and I belong to. And we need your help.”
Chapter Three
“What do you mean, the ‘community’ we belong to? I never signed up for anything like that. Unless by you biting me I was automatically thrown into another world that I have been trying to ignore, I do not belong to a ‘community’.” I responded shakily. Of course I knew that there must be others, but I didn’t think that they were considered a “community”. It’s so hard to rap my head around the idea of what I am, let alone others. And now they need my help? How can I help?
“Raven, I know what you must be thinking. ‘How can I help a group of loupe garoupes that I have never met?’Well believe me, you can.” Talon said after a moment of quiet. How did he know what I was thinking? Well, maybe it was kind of written on my face.
“Now that I have your full attention, let me explain my actions from two years ago until now. When I first got here, two years and 7 months I do believe, I met you right off the bat. You were a wonderful person, and I was getting comfortable with you. I even admit that I began to really like you, a lot. But of course I was on a mission. I was supposed to be looking for more people to join the loupe garoupe nation against the enemy. That night when I came to see you, I had it in my mind that I would try to convince you to be a part of our army, than the moon came out before I could tell you. Biting you without telling you why was irresponsible of me, but I couldn’t really control it. It wasn’t completely an accident. I just feel terrible that it ended up the way it did.” Talon paused, than shifted back to the steering wheel. He started up the car again, and we drove off, heading in the same direction we started out in.
I wasn’t to sure what to say, I didn’t understand. “Talon, I don’t get it. You left me stranded to find my way back to my house! I was out of my mind, and I didn’t know what I was doing. And then you left, and you didn’t come back to me. I called your house, and your mom said you weren’t home. Then when I called again later that week, no one answered. I finally found out that you and your family moved out of the house, and no one knew where you went. I hated you, and I still have anger built up. You shouldn’t have bothered coming to get me!”
Talon was still quiet. I knew that he was waiting for me to finally stop speaking before he finished talking. I sat still for a few moments, than he finally said what I had wanted to hear so badly.
“Raven, I loved you back then, and I love you now. And I need you to understand and cooperate with what is about to happen. We’re going to go through a bit of a rough time, and you will be isolated from your family and friends. That’s the hardest part. That and having to become what you were ‘cursed’ with when it bit you. Trust me, please. I won’t steer you wrong. Not this time and not ever again.”
“Okay Talon, I will believe you and will go along with this. But can I at least tell my mother what’s going on? She will want to know that I’m going to be gone for a while.”
Talon looked in pain after I asked this question, so I didn’t push it. He glanced at me as I let one tear roll down my cheek, and sighed heavily. I was afraid to leave my family without telling them that it was important. It crushed me inside to think that my mother was going to be worried about me and trying to figure out where I could’ve ran off to. Talon must have sensed the tension in me.
“Raven, if you really have to, go ahead and call home. Don’t tell them too much detail, and if your mother is trying to squeeze information out of you, hang up.”
I picked up my phone and hurriedly dialed my phone number. My mom didn’t pick up; no one did. I waited for the answering machine, than said “Mom, its Raven. I’m calling to tell you that I won’t be home for a while. I have some things I have to deal with, my ‘condition’ being one of them. I’m sorry, I will be home though. I promise and please trust me.”
That was the last contact I had with my family.
Chapter Four
We drove on for a little longer in silence. There was a sense of tension between us, but neither of us mentioned it. I finally felt awkward not talking to him, so I broke the silence.
“So, you still like me? You admitted it, so don’t try to lie!”
I knew that kinda got to him, because he started driving a lot faster. He didn’t answer for a minute or two, and then he slammed on the brakes.
“What the hell was that for, Talon? You could have killed us! You’re lucky you didn’t, otherwise Cierra and Sheana would be dead too!”
Talon stopped clenching the wheel tightly, and looked at me in shock. “What do you mean, ‘Cierra and Sheana would be dead too’? They aren’t in the car. So how would they die?”
“Well, it’s hard to explain Talon. And I personally, I don’t think you really want to know. I mean, it was kind of an accident if you ask me. I had a sleep over at the wrong time, and went all ‘whatever’ and ended up biting Cierra and Sheana. Sheana moved out of the country with her parents, and Cierra is still good friends with me; if I had died today, they would too because they are my loupe garoupes.”
“Whoa, and I thought you were all ‘anti- werewolf’. I didn’t really think you had bit anyone else. I guess we have to go get Cierra.” At this, Talon turned the car around and gunned it back towards my home.
“Why do we need Cierra? She doesn’t know what’s going on exactly, all she knows is she has the same condition that I do. She has no clue there are more then just us!” I tried to convince Talon that we didn’t need to go back to get her. Cierra had been my best friend for about 6 months, and then she ended up getting bit only 2 months ago. Shortly after I bit her and Sheana, Sheana left for America. She had been so scared that night that she ran all the way home. I never heard from her again. Cierra just held her neck with a towel as I tried to apologize. She forgave me, and I finally had to explain what my “condition” was. She thought it was kinda cool, until she changed. Then she realized just what kind of pain I went through.
It still didn’t make sense. Why did we need Cierra?
Talon glanced over at me, then back to the road. “We need her because she is your best friend, and she is also loupe garoupe. The reason we don’t need Sheana however is because she is out of the country. Satisfied?”
“NO! Why the hell did you act so weird when I tried to get you to say you like? You had already said it once, what changed?” I yelled at him.
“Raven, I was having an issue controlling myself. Do you need me to explain any further? If you do, you’re a blonde.” Talon was being really mean this time. I was used to him being sarcastic, but this was weird of him.
“I’m sorry if I pissed you off or something. God Talon, get a grip!”
He slammed on the brakes again, and turned off the car. Oh god, I’m in trouble now. I really pissed him off this time. But what he did next didn’t tell me he was pissed off at me. Quite the opposite.
He grabbed my arm and pulled me towards him, right over the middle console into his seat. I sat there on his lap, kind of in shock as he pulled my head down towards him. His lips made contact with mine, and I felt a shock of electricity run through me. I wanted to pull back, but I changed my mind; this was too much fun. This was my first kiss ever, so I really had no idea what to do. My hands went up to his hair, and my fingers were no longer the nice, gentle, curling style they had been. Now, my fingers laced into his hair and gripped it hard. I couldn’t let go. I had to get out of this situation; I have to hate Talon, and now I’m sitting here kissing him.
I pulled back from the kiss and looked into his eyes. They were a bit blurry, but cleared shortly after that. His eyes had a gold tint to them, and I got scared. I turned in the seat to face the rear view mirror. My eyes had the same glow to them. What happened to me? That had never happened before, unless I was about to change; it was broad daylight and the moon wasn’t anywhere near visible. I looked back at Talon, and his eyes were just starting to change back to blue.
“Why did our eyes change color Talon? There’s no moon, so it’s not time to change ourselves.”
“Raven, I just had to test something. I had to see if I really like you, and if you like me. Our eyes changed to gold because we enjoyed it. Even if your eyes hadn’t changed, the whole grabbing my hair thing gave it away.” Talon smiled at me, and I realized he was right about my eyes changing when I enjoyed something. A while back I had had a boy friend, and we never got too far. We were on a date, and he grabbed my hand. I looked up at him, and he screamed. He was really freaked out by my eyes, and he left the movie theater before the movie even started.
I looked back at the mirror, and my eyes were brown with a hint of gold around the edge. So I had definitely liked that. Too much, I thought to myself. Way too much. I tried to slide back into my seat, but he held me right to him. He was acting as though he was gonna kiss me again, which wouldn’t be a bad thing, but I wanted to get off his lap.
“Raven, there is this thing in loupe garoupe tradition. When two werewolves kiss and find that they both enjoyed it, they usually end up together for the rest of their lives. There’s also a kind of ritual that they go through, in order to be together for life.” Talon looked up at me to make sure I understood what he was saying.
“So, what you’re telling me is that you want to be with me for the rest of our lives? Well, I don’t know. I mean, maybe I would, but I don’t want to have to make a decision right this second. This sounds almost like marriage, and I’m only 18. I have to have time anyways, besides that; we have to go get Cierra. So, can I please be removed from your lap? Or are you driving with me here? I don’t think it’s legal.” I tried scooting back over into my seat, but Talon grabbed me by the shoulders and planted another kiss on my lips. Then he let me go.
Chapter Five
“Cierra, pick up the damn phone! You have to get to school anyways.” I yelled over the cell phone. We were a mile down the road from her house, and her mom had the phone next to her ear. Cierra liked to sleep in, even during the school year. And Cierra just started to wake up when we pulled into her drive way. Cierra’s mom Teri loved me like a daughter, but this was going to be had to explain. What was I to say, ‘I’m taking your daughter with me because she’s my bitch, literally’? Now that would be awkward to explain to anyone, but Teri knew what was going on about Cierra’s ‘condition’.
“And the reason you are waking me up?” Cierra asked as I started walking through her house to her room. She didn’t know I was there till I broke her door open; she had locked herself in there after her mother gave her the phone. She dropped her phone, then looked at me with a look saying ‘If only I could kill you’.
So, what do you think?
